What is an “Executor”? Is it the same thing as an “Administrator”?
An Executor is the person whom the decedent has appointed, in his or her will, to administer the estate. If the decedent left no will, or if the will fails to name a living, qualified executor who is willing to serve in that capacity, then the probate judge will appoint an administrator to handle the estate.
The word “executor” carries the masculine gender with it. Some wills refer to a female executor as an “executrix.” Increasingly, “executor” is being used as the gender-neutral form of the word.
